(The Confidence of Divine Sovereignty and the Communion of Faith)

July 29th reminds the believer that the Father’s sovereignty is never diminished by the clouds that surround life’s circumstances. Sorrow, suffering, disappointment, and uncertainty often obscure our vision, but they never alter his gracious purpose. Even when the believer becomes painfully aware of his own weakness, the Father’s faithfulness remains unchanged. The spirit of sonship continues to find confidence, not in itself, but in the unbroken communion made possible through the Son.

The Clouds Never Diminish the Father’s Sovereignty

Chambers writes:

“Clouds are the sorrows, sufferings, or providential circumstances within or without our personal lives, which actually seem to contradict the sovereignty of God.” (My Utmost for His Highest)

Chambers reminds us that appearances often challenge faith.

The clouds themselves are real.

Grief.

Illness.

Unanswered questions.

Unexpected disappointments.

They may temporarily conceal what the Father is accomplishing, but they cannot overturn his government.

The believer is not called to deny the reality of suffering.

He is called to interpret it in light of the Father’s sovereignty.

The clouds obscure our vision.

They do not obscure his purpose.

As the Holy Spirit bears witness with the human spirit, the spirit of sonship learns to trust the Father’s wisdom even when his ways remain hidden.

Faith does not wait for every cloud to disappear before believing.

It rests in the Father’s character while the clouds remain.

In time, what once appeared to contradict his goodness often becomes the very means through which the life of the Son is more fully manifested.

Communion Continues Despite Our Weakness

Spurgeon writes:

“Fully conscious of his (David’s) own lost estate, and of the deceitfulness and vileness of his nature, yet, by a glorious outburst of faith, he sings, ‘Nevertheless I am continually with thee.’” (Morning and Evening)

Spurgeon reminds us that mature faith is both humble and confident.

David does not deny the weakness of his own nature.

He acknowledges it honestly.

Yet he refuses to make his weakness the foundation of his confidence.

Instead, he turns his attention to the Father’s unchanging faithfulness.

The believer likewise grows by learning that assurance does not arise from confidence in self.

It arises from continual communion with the Father.

The spirit of sonship delights to remain near him.

Even after failure.

Even in weakness.

Even when clouds obscure the way ahead.

The Father’s gracious operation continually restores the believer’s heart to fellowship.

The life of the Son is sustained, not by human perfection, but by abiding communion with the One who never forsakes his children.

Where the Two Meet: Faith Looks Beyond the Clouds to Continual Communion

These truths belong together beautifully.

Chambers teaches that outward circumstances may appear to challenge the Father’s sovereignty.

Spurgeon reminds us that inward weakness cannot separate the believer from continual communion.

One truth concerns the clouds around us.

The other concerns the frailty within us.

Together they reveal that neither outward trials nor inward limitations determine the believer’s security.

The Father’s sovereign purpose remains steadfast.

His communion remains constant.

The life of the Son is manifested as faith looks beyond both the clouds without and the weakness within to the Father’s unfailing presence.

Pastoral Orientation

July 29th calls for steadfast trust and humble confidence.

Do not interpret the Father’s character by the clouds that presently surround you.

Trust that his sovereign purpose continues even when his ways are hidden from your understanding.

Do not allow the awareness of your own weakness to drive you away from communion.

Let it deepen your dependence upon the Father’s grace and your continual fellowship with him through the Son.

As you continue walking “after the spirit,” you will find that the clouds gradually lose their power to discourage you, and that humble confidence grows as you remain continually with the Father, whose purpose never fails and whose communion never ceases.

Trust beyond the clouds.

Remain continually with the Father.

And you will discover a life that sees the Father’s sovereign hand, rests confidently in his unchanging faithfulness, walks steadily through every uncertainty, and manifests the life of the Son through humble dependence, steadfast faith, and continual communion, to the glory of the Father.
